State of the Role
Every figure here will date, so use it as a snapshot, last verified October 2026, and lean on the chapters' arguments, which do not depend on any of it. A pay band or an open-role count quoted from this page next year may already be wrong; the reasoning in the chapter it came from will not be. Below, every fact from the book's Verified boxes, plus the dated market facts in the chapters' prose, is sorted by the question you are likely to bring: who hires and how many, what it pays in the US, Europe and China, which employers and deployment companies exist, what the titles and posts ask for, what the loops test, and what changed in 2025–26. The last section is the echo map: every number the book found circulating from a single source.
D.1
Reading this snapshot
Nothing on this page is new. Each fact is copied from a chapter with its date, its source link and its tier exactly as the chapter gives them, and each links back to the section that uses it, where the caveats and the argument live. Where a chapter's box gives no tier or no link, none has been added here.
Two reading rules carry over from How to Use This Book. First, the tiers: T1 is measured, primary and independent; T2 is measured and primary but vendor- or self-reported; T3 is secondary reporting; T4 is anecdote, opinion, advice, a stated target or a job post. Second, job posts: a post is primary evidence of what an employer asks for and advertises, and T4 evidence of how the job is actually done. Every posted band below shows what an employer advertised on the date given, not what anyone is paid.
Postings change and close without notice, and the counts move by the hour. Unless a row says otherwise, "read 17 October 2026" means read from the employer's own job-board feed on that day. Check a posting again before you quote it. Figures from different samples and windows sit side by side here only so you can find them: do not average them, and never blend growth rates across windows.
D.2
Who hires, and how many
The census. Plank counted 1,333 live FDE posts at 565 companies on 12 September 2026 and linked each one. About two-thirds were in the United States, and 9% sat at the frontier labs and Palantir combined (Plank, FDE job market, September 2026; T2, a measured count published by a firm that sells FDE services). Bloomberry, from about 1,000 posts, found 58% of FDE roles at companies with 11 to 200 employees (Bloomberry, November 2025, updated January 2026; T2). The two samples cover different windows and use different rules; do not combine them. See Where FDEs Work, 15.1.
FDE-titled roles by employer. Roles with "forward deployed" in the title, out of all open roles, read from the employers' own job-board feeds on 17 October 2026 (T1 as a count of what was advertised; it says nothing about hires). Source: Where FDEs Work, 15.1, and for OpenAI's breakdown Levels, 18.1.
Palantir
77 of 310
Overcounts. 32 are internships, new-grad posts or "Year at Palantir" placements, and 28 were created more than two years before the count. The oldest, a London Forward Deployed Software Engineer post, was created in December 2009.
OpenAI
26 of 814
24 individual roles with no seniority level in the title, plus two manager posts (New York; Tokyo).
Mistral
15 of 217
16 earlier the same day; the counts move by the hour.
Scale AI
14 of 182
Its three-level ladder is in D.3.
Anthropic
6 of 655
Undercounts. Anthropic listed 50 roles with "Applied AI" in the title.
Sierra
0 of 186
Undercounts. Sierra advertises the work as "Strategist, Agent Development".
Decagon
0 of 143
Undercounts. Decagon advertises the work as "Agent Deployment Engineer".
OpenAI Deployment Company
6 of 19
Its own board, separate from OpenAI's.
Plank's own caveat says the same as the overcount column: one posting can stand for many seats or for an evergreen pipeline.
Growth figures, unblended. Where FDEs Work leaves growth out on purpose and points here. Each figure below measures a different window, and the first two are one source counted many times (see the echo map). They are listed, not combined.
643 → 5,330 FDE postings (+729%)
April 2025 to April 2026, Indeed's postings data.
Indeed's own data, relayed through Business Insider and the Financial Times, then re-relayed (
Scaler,
Storyboard18; both T3). An echo.
H.3
More than 800%
January to September 2025, the same Indeed series.
Same sources and tier. An echo; a different window from the row above, so the two cannot make one rate.
H.3
21-fold year on year
FDE-related postings, H1 2026, China, 脉脉 data.
川观新闻 citing 脉脉 (T3, low). A different platform, market and window from every US figure; don't set it beside them.
15.6
Seniority, team shape and size. These are the dated figures on who is hired and how teams are built.
Seniority mix
Of the FDE posts that state experience: 12% entry level (0–2 years), 60% mid (3–5), 20% senior (6–8), 8% staff and above (9+).
Where the role sits
45% of posts mention a dedicated FDE team, 38% place the role in engineering, 14% in GTM or sales. The categories do not sum to 100%.
Bloomberry, as above; T2, one firm's classification of its own sample.
17.4
Salesforce
Launched its FDE team in April 2025 and "tripled its FDE team in just six months" (no base figure). "Around 40% to 50% of FDE movement at Salesforce is internal", built from "engineering, professional services, and customer success". Onboarding runs six weeks: two of training, four on the job. Some FDEs "are starting to work in pods that consist of one deployment strategist and two FDEs"; pods that "focus full-time on one client for about three months"; "Many work individually with a customer".
Ramp
Nine months into the function, "has around 15 FDEs in pods"; its job ad says FDEs "embed within core product engineering teams".
Cresta
FDEs paired with Forward Deployed Product Managers. Each FDE currently carries "两到三个项目" (two to three projects), which tools might raise to five or six. Hires no junior FDEs; wants a new hire in a project within "两到三个礼拜" (two to three weeks).
Palantir, historically
"Up until circa 2016, Palantir had more FDEs than it had 'normal' software engineers."
Demand from engineers
"Everyone wants them and there's only maybe 10% of the market that wants that role" (Patrick Kellenberger, Betts Recruiting, via the Wall Street Journal).
Pragmatic Engineer, relaying the Wall Street Journal; T4, a recruiter's estimate, relayed twice. An impression, not a number.
1.5
Headcounts at the 2026 deployment companies are in D.6.
D.3
Pay in the US, and the aggregates
Posted ranges, US base unless marked, read 17 October 2026 unless a post date is given. They are posted base ranges, before equity, and show what employers advertise. Main sources: Where FDEs Work, 15.4, Levels, 18.1 and 18.4.
OpenAI, FDE (incl. healthcare, legal and financial-services variants)
$185K–$300K plus equity; travel "up to 50%".
OpenAI, Forward Deployed Software Engineer
$153,000–$325,000 (New York, Seattle); $185,000–$325,000 (San Francisco); Washington, DC government post $145,800–$280,000.
OpenAI, Manager, FDE - NYC
$302K–$385K plus equity; travel up to 25%; three office days a week. Published 2026-09-23.
Anthropic, Staff FDE (US)
$280,000–$320,000 base; travel 25%. Published 14 October 2026.
Anthropic, Manager, FDE (New York)
$320,000–$405,000; travel 25–50%. First published February 2026, updated 2026-08-31.
Scale AI, "Frontier Agents Engineer (Forward Deployed Engineering)"
FDE, 4+ years: $180,000–$225,000. Senior, 5+ years: $216,000–$270,000. Staff, 8+ years: $252,000–$315,000. Base pay in San Francisco, New York and Seattle. The three texts differ only in title, years and band; none carries a travel line.
Decagon
Agent Deployment Engineer $175K–$230K. Engineering Lead, Strategic Deployments $200K–$400K.
Decagon's job board.
15.4
Sierra, Strategist, Agent Development
$200K–$290K; the post does not say whether that is base or on-target.
Glean, Founding FDE
$160K–$270K; "Certain roles may be eligible for variable compensation, equity". "This range encompasses varying levels of the role, you will be assessed for your level during the interview process".
Harvey, Forward Deployed Finance Engineer, Buyout
"OTE $254,600 - $350,000 USD (75/25 Split)" (base to variable, by the usual OTE convention), plus equity. The post doesn't say what the variable part is paid on. Published 6 October 2026.
Palantir, FDSE and Forward Deployed AI Engineer
Estimated $135K–$200K, which "may also include Restricted Stock units, sign-on bonus". The AI Engineer post: "traveling up to 25%… but flexible based on personal preferences".
Palantir, FDSE, New Grad - US Government (Washington, D.C.)
$135,000–$145,000 base; "travel 25-50% preferred, but requirements vary by team and location".
OpenAI Deployment Company, "Forward Deployed Engineer - US"
$170K–$400K with equity; 4+ years of engineering experience; San Francisco or New York; hybrid "with three days per week in the office"; "up to 50% travel". Published 15 June 2026, live on 17 October 2026.
One line to read with the bands: Anthropic's posts carry a standard line that "For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings" without saying whether the FDE role is one (15.4).
The aggregates. Different samples and windows: do not average them. Source: 15.4.
Plank median
Median posted base midpoint $193K, from the 388 of 1,333 posts that disclose pay (29%).
Drawn from every post that discloses pay, not only US ones. Base only; Plank stresses equity is the larger part of a lab package, which is Plank's estimate, not a posted figure. T2.
Plank by funding stage
About $150K at seed to about $243K at frontier labs (16 posts).
Plank's text gives Series B at $235K, but its own chart shows a Series B median of $185K from only five posts. Treat the stage gradient as unknown above seed. T2.
Bloomberry median
$173,816, from its earlier sample.
T2. Not comparable with Plank's.
Variable pay
Bloomberry: 8% of posts mention OTE and "exactly 0%" are quota-carrying, while it calls its 30% "Sales Engineer+" type "quota-carrying".
Its own figures disagree; treat the variable-pay share as unknown.
D.4
Pay in Europe and Canada
Posted bands outside the US, in the currencies the posts use. Read 17 October 2026 unless a date is given. Source: Where FDEs Work, 15.4, and Levels, 18.1.
Anthropic, FDE, London
£225,000–£255,000; travel 25–50% (September 2026).
Decagon, Agent Deployment Engineer, London
£110K–£150K.
Decagon's job board.
15.4
OpenAI Deployment Company, FDE
London £90K–£150K; Paris €115K–€200K.
DeployCo's job board.
15.4
Cohere, FDE
CA$175K–CA$385K.
OpenAI also lists a Tokyo FDE manager post, with travel "up to 40%, although mainly local"; the chapters give no band for it (18.1).
D.5
Pay in China
Chinese offers quote monthly pay and a number of months, 15 or 16 at the large firms, so annualise before you compare. Main sources: Where FDEs Work, 15.6, Leading FDEs, 17.2 and Levels, 18.5.
ByteDance, 豆包AI大模型FDE
¥35,000–70,000 a month over 15 months (up to ¥1.05 million a year).
中新经纬 read postings on 猎聘 and BOSS直聘 (
中新经纬 via 36Kr, June 2026; T3, a journalist reading posts). Posted monthly pay, H1 2026.
Ant Digital, B-end FDE
¥40,000–60,000 a month over 15 months.
Same report; T3.
Zhipu (智谱华章), "FDE负责人" (FDE lead)
¥60,000–80,000 a month. The report does not say how many months are paid or whether the lead manages people.
Same report, republished by 36Kr on 2026-06-05; T3 reporting of a T4 post. The only lead-level data point.
17.2
A Shanghai AI company, per one practitioner
Lower-level FDEs "2万元至3万元不等" (¥20,000–30,000) a month; higher-level FDEs paid mainly as an annual package, "多在40万元以上" (mostly above ¥400,000). Interviewees say million-yuan packages are concentrated among top talent and are "not the industry average".
Same report, pseudonymous practitioner; T4, one practitioner. The move from a monthly wage to a package is the level change.
18.5
Tencent Cloud (single source)
¥35,000–65,000 (unit as given; presumably monthly); months not given.
Alibaba Cloud (single source)
¥20,000–50,000 over 16 months.
xdash, as above; T3; could not be checked.
Industrial software company, Tangshan (single source)
"人工智能交付工程师(FDE)" at ¥8,000–16,000 a month, requiring a master's degree and on-site work at manufacturers; roughly a tenth of a model company's lead pay by xdash's reckoning.
xdash, as above; T3; could not be checked.
xdash's ByteDance, Ant and Zhipu figures are identical to 中新经纬's, so they are an echo, not confirmation (D.11). The checkable figures mostly show seniority, and the large employers' posted bands overlap heavily; only the unchecked Tangshan post points to a gap by employer type, so "the employer type shows through in the pay" is plausible, not shown (15.6).
D.6
Employer types and the 2026 deployment companies
Where FDEs Work, 15.2 sorts employers into four types by what they buy with an FDE's time: AI labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Cohere); application startups (Sierra, Decagon, Harvey, Glean and hundreds of smaller firms); Palantir-style platforms; and deployment companies or FDE consultancies (the labs' 2026 spin-outs, and the consultancies that have adopted the title). The dated employer moves behind that sorting follow.
OpenAI Deployment Company ("DeployCo")
Launched May 2026, backed by more than $4 billion from 19 firms led by TPG, with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield as co-leads, and Bain & Company, Capgemini and McKinsey as alliance partners. Acquired the consultancy Tomoro, whose team ERP Today puts at "approximately 150 FDEs" (an echo; no independent count exists). ERP Today describes the backers as "a consortium of private equity and institutional firms".
DeployCo, later
The acquisition of Northslope "pushed the FDE headcount into the hundreds"; "A small group of engineers from OpenAI's own internal FDE organization is also on temporary loan"; OpenAI has also committed $150 million to a partner programme. "Owning model access and having working AI are two different procurement decisions." DeployCo was still choosing its first customers at the time of the report.
DeployCo, as its posts describe it
"The deployment arm of OpenAI", operating "at the intersection of cutting-edge AI, enterprise transformation, and scaled services delivery". Its founding FDE will "own both technical and business value outcomes end-to-end" and "ramp quickly toward management responsibilities", and should "make disciplined standardization-versus-customization decisions instead of defaulting to bespoke work". A second post invites "an established team of two to five people" to apply together; "People who apply together may work on different deployments". The "Technical Deployment Lead" is "measured by delivery reliability, quality of technical execution, customer trust, operating leverage, judgment under pressure, and the strength of field signal shared back to Product and Research".
Ode with Anthropic
A $1.5 billion implementation company, launched May 2026 as a joint venture with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and others. Acquired the AI services firm Fractional AI; employs 100 engineers, "over half" of them former founders. "The private equity firms backing Ode will funnel their own portfolio companies to the joint venture as potential customers." Its chief executive: "It's pretty easy to imagine this as a trillion-dollar company someday if we execute well." "Anthropic's internal team will continue to focus on strategic, mission-aligned deployments" (a spokesperson's statement).
Deloitte and Accenture
Named as Ode's competition: "consulting giants like Deloitte and Accenture, which have created their own FDE teams".
TechCrunch, as above; T3.
2.5
Palantir, AIP bootcamps
From 2023, bootcamps "deliver real workflows on actual customer data in five days or less versus our traditional pilots, which generally take one to three months"; roughly 70 that November; then "more than 560 bootcamps across 465 organizations to-date". Examples: a $26 million ACV five-year agreement five weeks after a December bootcamp; a $96 million deal after two bootcamps. No conversion rate disclosed.
Palantir's board
The only board in the sample with a full pipeline: internships, new-grad posts, a year-long placement, and specialised forward deployed roles in infrastructure, reliability, security and customer enablement, with Deployment Strategist posts listed alongside.
Palantir's job board, read 17 October 2026.
15.3
China's market shape
Driven mainly by in-house teams at ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent; external professional services still early; outward delivery expected to accelerate after 2027 as the large firms productise. A forecast, not a measurement.
An FDE industry report by 霞光智库, summarised by
川观新闻, September 2026; T3, relaying a report whose method is not given.
2.7
Pilot price points. Pear suggests a 20–50% discount on a prorated share of the expected annual contract (March 2026). Shimoni proposes a fee of about $10K for a 30-day AI pilot, and says it "eliminates 90% of the people who just want to 'see how this AI stuff works'" (July 2025; the 90% is his estimate, not a measurement). Heavybit gives no figure and speaks of a "token fee" (February 2020). None of these is a market rate (Before the Engagement, 4.4).
As of October 2026 no public evidence says whether the deployment companies' field work flows back into the labs' products, whether they report outcomes rather than headcount and funding, or whether their engineers own outcomes rather than supplying staff augmentation (2.5).
Time on site and travel, by employer. The figures disagree, and the Palantir ones may describe different eras (15.3, 18.4).
OpenAI
New FDEs told to expect "around 50% of their time on site"; some in the UAE and Japan on site "around 80% of the time"; in Europe or the US they "might spend 2-3 weeks per month with customers". Posted: "Travel up to 50% is required" on most FDE posts; Tokyo travel "mainly within Japan"; the Financial Services post asks the FDE to own "on-call readiness across financial workflows".
Anthropic
FDE "Travel frequently (25-50%)"; Staff FDE "(25%)"; Manager 25–50%.
Posts fetched 2026-10-17.
Palantir
"expects around 25% of FDEs' time to be spent onsite with customers". An alumnus: FDEs were "typically expected to 'go onsite' to the customer's offices and work from there 3-4 days per week". Posted: new-grad FDSE 25–50% "preferred, but requirements vary"; Forward Deployed AI Engineer up to 25%.
Commure
"up to 50%".
Pragmatic Engineer, August 2025; T3.
Glean
Hybrid, "3-4 days a week" in an office, plus 25–50% travel.
Post, read 17 October 2026.
Decagon
"We're an in-office company".
Post, read 17 October 2026.
DeployCo
Three office days a week and up to 50% travel.
Post, read 17 October 2026.
Harvey
Travel as frequency, not percentage: "2–3+ times per month… typically… 1–3 days at a time".
Forward Deployed Finance Engineer posts, October 2026.
Scale AI
The three ladder posts carry no travel line.
Posts fetched 2026-10-17.
All FDE posts (Bloomberry)
68% of FDE posts require travel. The same source puts its "builder" type at 30–50% in one place and FDEs at 50–75% in its own table, so quote neither as settled.
D.7
Titles and job families
The title no longer tells you which job you are looking at, and a posting's department is a better guide to whose targets you will be measured against (What an FDE Is, 1.3).
Three types under one title
"Builder FDE", 60% of posts ("70-90% coding"); "Sales Engineer+", 30% ("a solutions engineer or sales engineer role that got rebranded", marked "quota-carrying", though elsewhere the article says none are); "Internal Tools Builder", 10% ("a GTM engineer or RevOps role").
Same company, different jobs
Anthropic's "Applied AI Engineer, Enterprise" (London, published 28 September 2026) takes customers to "the decision to build", then sets "their systems integration partner up to deliver… while the partner does the build".
Other titles for the work
Applied AI Engineer, Agent Deployment Engineer, Deployment Strategist, Forward Deployed Finance Engineer; Sierra's "Strategist, Agent Development". Palantir's board, read 17 October 2026, lists Deployment Strategist postings beside its FDSE ones. Glean puts its Founding FDE "in a pod with Forward Deployed PMs"; Anthropic pairs its FDE team with Engagement Managers.
Tencent
Three 前线部署工程师 posts, filed in the product job family; experienced hires (社招) asking for "三到五年以上工作经验"; "3 年以上工程或者 toB 交付经验" given as the usual bar.
ByteDance
Full-time "AI FDE 工程师" roles filed under R&D, across Feishu, Volcano Engine and its data platform; FDE internships filed under "销售-销售支持" (sales, sales support). One post titled "豆包AI大模型FDE" asks for "本科及以上学历", "扎实的编程基础(Python/Java等)" and "熟悉大模型相关产品API调用".
The services end, by title
An industrial software company in Tangshan advertises an "人工智能交付工程师(FDE)": an AI delivery engineer.
xdash, chapter 1, August 2026; T3.
15.6
A route in through delivery
A practitioner reached the role after implementation (实施工程师), pre-sales, product management and project management, and describes it as one that "brings together pre-sales, product and project" (这个岗位刚好整合了售前、产品、项目三个环节).
The Chinese name
前线部署工程师 is the most common rendering in the press and Tencent's title. A Beijing municipal policy document of July 2026, 京发改〔2026〕1185号, uses 前沿部署工程师. Others use 前置 or, in Taiwan, 前線. 前端部署工程师 ("front-end deployment engineer") is misleading; the 中新经纬 piece uses it, so search for 前线部署工程师 and FDE.
D.8
What the posts ask for
Every row is primary evidence of what one employer asks for and T4 evidence of how the work is done. Postings change or close; check them before you quote them. Bloomberry's frequencies across about 1,000 posts (T2): Python 66%, TypeScript 35%, AWS 32%, AI agents 35%, LLM experience 31%, RAG 12%, customer-facing ability 47%; "working directly with customers" 55% and integrating systems or APIs 32% among responsibilities (3.1).

"You don't need to have shipped agents to production"; "Former technical founders are also encouraged to apply"; "Side projects and prototypes count".
Anthropic, Applied AI Engineer, Public Sector
"Work primarily on-site with the customer's engineering and mission teams in secure government facilities"; "Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph"; prefers "Experience deploying and operating software in air-gapped or classified environments".
Anthropic, Manager, FDE (New York)
"10+ years of experience"; "2+ years of people management experience within a services/post-sales/FDE organization"; experience "building organizations from 0->1"; "a player-coach role with a strong bias toward leadership".
Palantir, FDSE - US Government; Deployment Strategist
FDSE: the "flights" and "money laundering" questions; responsibilities "similar to those of a startup CTO". Deployment Strategist: "locate their biggest pain points"; "Lead training sessions to ensure that the product is meeting user needs"; make sure the product "is being used widely enough to have concrete impact on our partners' operations". Re-read on the live postings in October 2026.
Glean, Founding FDE (first published January 2026)
"Before you write a line of code"; "Builder's judgment: You know what's actually buildable, how long it will take, and when to simplify scope to get something real into production faster." "The best of what you build ships to every Glean customer in the world". "Former technical founders are strongly encouraged to apply".
Decagon, Engineering Lead, Strategic Deployments (July 2026)

Harvey, Forward Deployed Finance Engineer (October 2026)
"3+ years on the investment team at a buyout fund"; "Python, SQL, or experience building internal tools is a plus".
ElevenLabs, US FDE (published 14 October 2026)
"It's ok if you only worked with customers in student clubs or side projects".
Scale AI, FDE (updated 12 October 2026)
"strong fundamentals in distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and system design".
D.9
Interview loops
No employer publishes its FDE loop, and nobody has published pass rates. What exists is candidate reports gathered by prep sites from small, self-selected samples, all T4. Accessed 17 October 2026; source: Getting Hired, 16.1.
Palantir
Recruiter call, technical screen, three 60-minute rounds "drawn from a pool" of Decomposition, Learning, Coding, Re-engineering and System Design, then a hiring manager. "Decomposition is nearly universal." Reported prompts include "Design a system to improve traffic in NYC" and "Design a sync system between two employee record systems".
Aced guide, no named author, 3 interview experiences listed. T4.
OpenAI
"A roughly one-week build you submit as working code, a running app, and a recorded walkthrough"; coding where "AI tools are permitted"; system design "with an LLM-deployment focus", including "What evaluation would you build to catch failures before a customer sees them?"; a project deep dive; behavioural. One verified candidate (US, about April 2026) says the walkthrough "focused on why I made certain design choices" and the coding round "felt like an easy, multi-step LeetCode problem". The report tags its take-home and final round "Customer Interaction" but describes no role-play.
Anthropic
Nothing first-hand or official found. A January 2026 Blind thread asking about the Applied AI loop drew no description of it. The Staff FDE post describes no process.
Scale AI
No loop reported. The FDE post requires "strong fundamentals in distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and system design": the coding floor, stated in the ask.
All of it is perishable. Both Aced guides were updated in the month before access and change as reports arrive. Three gaps hold across every employer: no pass rates for any round, no account of how employers weigh rounds, and no evidence that a dedicated "customer role-play" round is standard anywhere (16.2). A five-round Anthropic loop with a client-simulation round and a failure rate is circulating in Chinese; it is a forming echo, and this book does not repeat the figure (D.11).
Prep material, dated: Paden Gayle's free FDE Handbook (Maven), about ten pages, promises "the four things you have to demonstrate to get hired" without naming them on its landing page (T4) (16.2).

What changed in 2025–26
The dated events behind the snapshot, in order. Posting publication dates are in D.8 and are not repeated here.
6 February 2025
OpenAI launched European data residency for its API: requests "will be handled in-region by OpenAI with zero data retention", and residency "can only be configured for new projects".
April 2025
Salesforce launched its FDE team.
August 2025
Swarm, the open-sourced framework built from the Klarna work, "has been replaced by the OpenAI Agents SDK", to which "the Solutions Architecture and FDE teams contribute". In August 2025 the Pragmatic Engineer also reported Ramp's ~15 FDEs and Palantir's ~25% on site (D.2, D.6).
Pragmatic Engineer, August 2025; T3.

November 2025
In the Altimeter interview Jarvis describes AgentKit, a visual builder, as "a continuation of that story that started in 2023", and says FDEs now use it "as like a standard tool in their toolbox". Bloomberry published its ~1,000-post analysis (updated January 2026).
January 2026
Anthropic reported that Opus 4.5 "initially scored 42% on CORE-Bench", partly because of "rigid grading that penalized “96.12” when expecting “96.124991…”"; "After fixing bugs and using a less constrained scaffold", the score "jumped to 95%".
March 2026
The Pragmatic Engineer reported FDE hires disappointed by "a typical IT services mindset"; one "quit 4 weeks later". Salesforce said it had "tripled its FDE team in just six months".
17 April 2026
The Federal Reserve, the FDIC and the OCC issued SR 26-2, which "supersedes and replaces SR letter 11-7" and is "expected to be most relevant to banking organizations with over $30 billion in total assets". Footnote 3 of its attachment: "Generative AI and agentic AI models are novel and rapidly evolving. As such, they are not within the scope of this guidance."
7 May 2026
Before the change, most banks avoided validating GenAI tools "by classifying them as productivity tools rather than models".
May 2026
OpenAI launched DeployCo and Anthropic launched Ode (D.6). Scale first published its three-level FDE ladder.
4 June 2026
Baker Tilly expects GenAI model risks to be covered by "separate guidance or rulemaking", none issued as of its writing. Insurers sit under different regulators.
5 June 2026
中新经纬, republished by 36Kr, reported Chinese FDE posted pay (D.5) and the Doubao FDE post's requirements.
July 2026
Beijing policy 京发改〔2026〕1185号 named the role 前沿部署工程师. MarketScale reported DeployCo's Northslope acquisition and the $150 million partner programme; TechCrunch reported Ode's details.
August 2026
APPSO, republished by 36Kr on 29 August, reported Chinese job families and asks (D.7). xdash's open book published its chapter 1 pay figures (D.5).
September 2026
Plank's census on 12 September (D.2). 川观新闻 summarised the 霞光智库 FDE industry report, repeating several echoes (D.11).
17 October 2026
The book's own count of FDE-titled roles and posted bands (D.2–D.4). O'Reilly's The Forward Deployed Engineer by Paden Gayle is in Early Release: 2 of its 12 chapters are available (covering the role's boundaries and discovery), with a publication date of 25 December 2027.

Echo map
An echo is one self-reported figure repeated by several outlets until it looks independently confirmed (H.3). Each row traces one figure to its single origin. Count each once, at its origin, and never blend growth rates across windows.
FDE postings 643 → 5,330 (+729%), and "more than 800%"
Indeed's own postings data. Two different windows (April 2025 to April 2026; January to September 2025), so they cannot make one rate.

Morgan Stanley's "98%"
Morgan Stanley's press release: "98% of Financial Advisor teams have adopted" (
Morgan Stanley, T2), a team-adoption figure.
OpenAI's enterprise guide restates it as "98% of Morgan Stanley advisors use OpenAI every day" (
OpenAI, T2), daily individual use; the ZenML summary of Jarvis's account repeats an adoption figure that matches OpenAI's own published number, a possible echo.

Bloomberry's skill percentages (a watch)
Bloomberry, November 2025, updated January 2026: one sample, one window, one analyst (T2).
Not yet traced elsewhere. If you meet these percentages on a course page or in an explainer, check whether they trace back here before counting them as a second source.
3.1
What to do.
- Before you quote any figure on this page, open the source and re-date it; if the posting has closed or changed, say so rather than repeat the old number.
- Quote a band with its post, its date and whether it is base or on-target earnings, and annualise Chinese offers by the number of months paid.
- Keep growth figures and pay aggregates apart: one window and one sample per sentence, never an average across them.
- When a number appears in a second outlet, check it against the echo map and count it once, at its origin.
- Use the snapshot to choose questions, not conclusions; the questions to ask an employer are in Where FDEs Work, 15.8.
