Sources

Before you quote this book to a customer, check the source: here are all 119 it links, by chapter, each with the tier that says how far to trust it. Each source is listed once, under the chapter that first cites it, in the order the book cites them. An entry gives the title in its original language, the publisher or author, the publication date where known, and the tier that chapter gives it, as defined in How to Use This Book: How the evidence is graded. The tier belongs to the claim the book cites the source for, not to the publisher, so a source cited again later may carry a different tier there. "Tier not stated" means the chapter gives none; it is not a verdict on quality. Pages change and job posts close: every link was accessed in October 2026, and an undated page is cited as it stood then.

Tier
What it means
The book's example
T1
Measured, primary and independent of the vendor.
The Markup's test of New York City's MyCity chatbot (F.1).
T2
Measured and primary, but reported by the vendor or the customer itself.
Palantir's 2020 S-1 filing (F.1).
T3
Secondary reporting: a journalist or analyst relaying what someone else measured or said.
The Register on NHS trusts' use of the Federated Data Platform (F.1).
T4
Anecdote, opinion or a job post. A vendor's advice, doctrine, stated targets or opinion are T4, not T2. A job post is T4 for how the work is done and primary evidence of what employers ask for.
OpenAI's FDE posting (F.1).

What to do.

  • Before you repeat a figure from this book to a customer, open its source here and read the tier beside it. Quote a T2 as the vendor's own account and a T4 as advice or opinion, never as a result.
  • When several sources below give the same number, check whether they trace back to one origin. An echo counted many times is still one source; How to Use This Book shows two.
  • Recheck job posts and dated facts before you rely on them. Posts close and bands move; the date beside each entry tells you how old it is.
